Human sexuality is the ways in which people experience and express themselves as sexual beings; the awareness of themselves as males or females. Sometimes sexuality is defined as sex but it actually encompasses many different aspects of our lives beyond sex alone. The meaning of the word sex has evolved a lot from the era of Shakespeare when it simply meant the category of being male or female by biological designation, to the present day when it is applied in a whole range of meanings. Therefore today the word sex has to be interpreted in the context used e.g. having sex means the process of people engaging in sexual intercourse or simply mating. When people say something is sexy, it means it is really good. However, sex still retains the original meaning of “being male or female”.

The term gender was introduced in the mid twentieth century. It means the constellation of cognitive, behavioural and personality traits that differ between the sexes. Gender is also sometimes used to mean male or female as when an official form asks for ones gender and the respondent is expected to tick M or F. Erroneously, many people understand gender to mean female because of the concerted efforts of feminists to fight for the rights of the female gender. Gender stands for the attributes of either female or male.
In order for us to understand human sexuality, a lot of discussion rotates around the word sex in its various meanings. Therefore, we must understand sexual relationships and sexual identities for human sexuality to make full sense to us.
