Many Kenyans believe that once they are in their homes or the surrounding environment, they are safe. Others get a false sense of security immediately they enter the precincts of their gated communities such as Runda Estate and they drop their guard. There is also the other group of people who feel that insecurity affects other people and not them but if it were to happen to them, it would happen anyway. The most serious obstacle to personal safety is an attitude of ignorance, complacency and fatalism.
Ignorant people will usually not concern themselves with security issues. They believe public security and their private arrangements will perfectly keep them safe and secure. The complacent people will have all the necessary security knowledge but will ignore alertness just because they have never been victims of a security situation. The fatalism group resigns to fate and believes that if they are going to be attacked, they will be attacked and there is nothing much they can do to stop the attack.
The fact is that you are most vulnerable to a security situation when you feel safest. A criminal attack against you or your family can take place any time in your home and its surroundings. You can minimize the chances of such attacks by taking conscious measures and constantly monitoring the measures you have taken to ensure that they are actually protective. By assuming more responsibility for your own security, you can live for a long time without being involved in a security situation. Additionally, in the unfortunate event of an attack, you would be better prepared and conditioned to survive the attack with minimal or no injury. You are also more likely to recover better and quickly from the impact of a security situation.
